RECTOR’S BLOG – June 19, 2020
Dear Esteemed Members of The English School Community,
I write in my role as Head of School and Rector to express my best wishes to you all at this extraordinary time. Most of all, I wish to salute those of you have been ill during the pandemic or stressed by other factors affecting your familial well-being and economic situation. Our school community stands with you and we will continue to stand in solidarity with you, The English Way.
Looking back, it has been a surprising year to say the least, but we now see light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully, the epidemic will continue to fade away as the statistics on the Saludata website indicate, and not only in Bogotá. http://saludata.saludcapital.gov.co/osb/index.php/datos-de-salud/enfermedades-trasmisibles/covid19/
Today is Open Day at the end of the school year 2019-20 and I am confident that you have had productive conversations focused on student successes and challenges for the future. We all know that the focus of this great community and school as it moves towards celebrating 60 years is the security, care and well-being of each and every student in an inclusive environment. This continues to be the hallmark of our unique school and it is the main reason why we continue to attract matriculations from aspirational local and international families.
As you will have read in my report that forms part of the accompanying literature for the Asamblea General next Tuesday, June 23rd, we have had another year of tremendous successes.
I will cherry-pick a few successes for this letter but please read all of the communications and please try to attend and participate in what will be a very special virtual Asamblea when once again we come together to focus on a great TES future.
This is an exciting time right now for The English School as we interpret our vision and mission for our students in a very business-like and traditionally familial manner. There has been a clear focus this last year not just on producing a dynamic and all-encompassing Strategic Plan that will seriously come into play in our next academic year but also to have reflective practices built into Key Performance Indicators that will provide measurable feedback on our successes and challenges.
And it is with a sincere thank you that I once again recognise the drive and enthusiasm of not just our school leadership and staff, and our administration and support staff but especially so that of the three parent representative groups. The members of the Junta de Dirección have led the way with a number of initiatives and they deserve a high level of praise for their guidance and advice, especially during recent challenging months with the need to commit uncounted hours of positive contributions, for example, in guiding and revising a very workable budget for the coming year. The Parents Council too deserves praise for unifying parent representation in such a welcoming way, and again especially so with so many virtual meetings in support of the first class education that our students deserve. Finally, let’s all recognize the social support given and spectacularly so by TESPAS at our Community day.
As I mentioned above, the academic year 2019-20 has been tremendous not least because of the success story of our Distance Learning. Yes, it all came as a surprise and our smooth-running TES programmes were quickly re-adjusted so that all of our students could benefit in an inclusive school. There have been challenges especially for our young TEN children and our amazing final year students who are now between two graduations – one virtual and one presencial! A big well done therefore to everyone involved, students, families, school leaders, teachers and administrative and support staff. We continue to work as a unified team and as we further improve our virtual schooling as we move into the new school year we know who will benefit… our TES students!
Looking back, we began this year on a high after receiving our external examination results with great academic successes and our best academic results in the IB DP for 10 years, in Prueba Saber for the last 3 years, and remarkably so with the digital IB MYP results which we began as a leader in Latin America just three years ago.
Additionally, there are full details of our incredible sporting successes at team and individual level in my report to the Asamblea General. Our world-leading TESMUN team – backed up by 400 engaged TES students – celebrated TESMUN 16 with new guests from Mexico and flew the flag as the first Colombian school at the renowned The Hague International Model United Nations and once again in New York.
Our musicians blew us away at the Primary School UNCOLI festival and just today our Middle School students produced a series of remarkable virtual concerts. RoboTES too engaged on the world scale travelling to Denmark and making their mark.
These are just a few of our successes this year, so well done again to everyone involved!
But, it’s not all over yet as we always look ahead.
Our community and school leaders are very focused on producing the quality school environment that our students, their families and our employees deserve. As such, and especially at a time of COVID-19 crisis, we have agreed a budget with investments in buildings, resources and people that safeguard our future as a leading twenty first century educational establishment in Colombia. We have made considerable efficiency savings in a balanced, consultative and strategic manner and we guarantee, even with a 0% increase in the monthly payments (pensiones), a Comprehensive Culture of Excellence and Effective Governance that mean current and aspirational families know that TES matriculation for 2020-21 makes perfect sense.
We now move forward as a committed and united community. In this way we face the challenges, communicate well and look to a business-like future that all of our TES community members deserve. Enjoy a well-deserved holiday and rest assured that TES leadership is keeping an eagle eye on events as they unfold. We will be in touch at the Asamblea General and regularly over the coming months in line with our Plan Retorno that we will be publishing next week.
With best regards, The English Way.
