What is the IB Education?

As parents, it is natural to wonder how we can provide our children with the best tools for their development, success and happiness. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Organisation is constantly working to answer this question, innovating in education to nurture well-rounded individuals who think critically and are curious about knowledge. In the IB, students develop cross-curricular skills, tackle challenges with an open mind and, most importantly, fall in love with learning. They discover a passion for knowledge, which drives them to explore and grow in a stimulating and enriching environment.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is not just a school diploma, it is an educational philosophy.

Is the IB Education Only Applicable to Secondary?

Despite its name, the International Baccalaureate (IB) covers the entire school life, from the age of 3 to 19. Its structure comprises four programmes:

These programmes form a comprehensive educational continuum, ensuring progressive and balanced learning. From the earliest years, this approach fosters independence, reflection and critical analysis, as students explore transdisciplinary concepts that enable them to understand the world in a holistic way. By the time they reach Secondary, they are equipped to engage with academic knowledge in depth and with a critical eye. That is why, in the IB, the learning journey begins from the very first day of school.

Which schools in Bogotá follow the IB curriculum?

To deliver IB programmes, schools must be authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organisation. In Bogotá, most schools offer only the Diploma Programme (DP), which is aimed at students in Grades 10 and 11. However, following the full range of IB programmes from the early years enables a smooth transition and structured learning at every stage of development.

We, The English School,  are the only school in Bogotá authorised to offer all four IB programmes (PYP, MYP, DP, CP). With over 43 years’ experience as an IB school, we guarantee a high-quality educational model that is aligned with international standards and constantly evolving to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Pre-Nursery to Grade 4

In the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the youngest IB students learn and apply knowledge, concepts and skills from a range of subjects to explore six transdisciplinary themes and begin to develop the attributes of the learner profile.

Grades 5 to 9

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is an academic framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, culminating in a Personal Project. Students who complete the MYP are well prepared to undertake the IB Diploma Programme.

In the final two years of Secondary, students can choose between the Diploma Programme or the Career-related Programme; both are pre-university programmes recognised by universities. Both programmes prepare students for a career path and are based on a broad and inspiring curriculum. These programmes enable our students to gain confidence and self-assurance:

Grades 10 and 11

The Diploma Programme (DP) is a curriculum that emphasises both the breadth and depth of knowledge. The DP comprises six subject groups and the core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) and the Extended Essay (a research project of up to 4,000 words).

Grades 10 and 11

The Career-related Programme (CP) combines two DP courses with the school’s own vocational training. It prepares students for further education or to embark immediately on their chosen career path.
