Committed to Sustainability
At The English School, we nurture globally-minded citizens with a strong commitment to sustainability, fostering environmental education based on a socio-critical approach that recognises the interconnection between natural systems, culture and society. Our educational model integrates experiential learning and promotes environmental awareness as a fundamental part of our students’ development.
Our environmental education is based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is implemented through the School Environmental Project (PRAE), in line with Colombian regulations and the principles of the International Baccalaureate (IB). This enables us to strengthen our innovative curriculum, which nurtures citizens who take responsibility for the planet.
Green Team
Environmental leaders in action
Green Team is our School Environmental Committee, made up of students from Grade 1 to Grade 11, who lead sustainable projects both within and outside the school. Their active involvement makes them agents of change, promoting care for the environment in Colombia and around the world.
Through specific initiatives with both local and global impact, our students develop critical thinking skills to tackle environmental challenges, in line with the IB’s values and our school’s mission. The Green Team meets weekly to design campaigns and build on existing initiatives, ensuring their long-term impact.
Key Sustainability Projects at The English School
School vegetable garden
Thanks to the commitment and dedication of our students, we have managed to grow an organic vegetable garden in a greenhouse that operates all year round. Using organic seeds that we have grown ourselves, we have created a self-sustaining system that benefits the whole community. The harvest is shared with students, teachers and administrative staff, promoting an appreciation for food and strengthening our sense of community.
Composting and vermicomposting
At our school shop, TES Bites, we weigh the organic waste generated each week and turn it into compost using a worm composting system. This system enables us to reduce waste and enrich our soil, contributing to a circular economy model within our school, which has an innovative curriculum.
Waste management and recycling
Through our ‘Eco-Points’ campaign, we encourage the separation of waste at source. We regularly assess the volume of recyclable waste and implement strategies to improve its recovery, ensuring that waste is disposed of responsibly and efficiently.
Awareness campaigns
Every Thursday, we launch a new ‘Green Initiative’, addressing current environmental issues to encourage critical thinking among our students. From campaigns such as ‘Bottles of Love’ and ‘Be the Solution, Not the Pollution‘ to the analysis of environmental issues such as water rationing in Bogotá, flooding or forest fires, we aim to help our students understand the cause-and-effect relationship in environmental problems.
