Diploma Programme (DP)
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is one of two pathways that students at our school can choose to complete their high school education in Grades 10 and 11. It is a highly demanding academic programme designed to prepare students for university, which develops skills that will last a lifetime. At The English School, the DP is characterised by a balanced, flexible and interdisciplinary curriculum that fosters inquiry, critical thinking, social engagement and academic rigour.
This programme promotes an international education that is responsive to local and global contexts and focused on developing 21st-century skills.
Programme Structure
The DP curriculum is organised into six subject groups plus three core components that support the student’s holistic development:
Studies in language and literature
Language acquisition
Individuals and societies
Sciences
Mathematics
Arts
Componentes troncales
Theory of Knowledge
Theory of Knowledge (TOK) plays a special role in the Diploma Programme, as it gives students the opportunity to reflect on the nature, scope and limitations of knowledge and the process of knowing.
Extended Essay
This is an independent research project led by the student themselves, culminating in a 4,000-word essay. It involves an in-depth study of a clearly defined topic, either through a subject-specific approach or through an interdisciplinary approach combining two subjects from the Diploma Programme.
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
It runs throughout the Diploma Programme and involves students in a variety of activities alongside their academic studies. CAS enables students to enhance their personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning. It also provides them with opportunities for self-determination and collaboration with others, whilst fostering a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment in their work. At the same time, CAS plays an important role in counterbalancing the academic pressure of the DP.
What Makes the DP Programme at The English School Unique?
Our school stands out for its wide range of subjects, which allows each student to create a curriculum tailored to their vocation, interests and career aspirations.
This range of subjects enables pupils to define a curriculum clearly focused on their future vocational and professional aspirations. Furthermore, the range of subjects facilitates and encourages links with interdisciplinary projects such as TESMUN and Round Square, as they broaden pupils’ skills, knowledge and abilities through engagement with real-world contexts and situations.
In this regard, the CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) programme is an excellent opportunity to pursue experiential learning, enabling students to make a positive impact on the most vulnerable communities and contexts through social service projects.
