Primary Years Programme (PYP)
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed for students aged 3 to 12, from the start of their school life through to Grade 4, providing a holistic education that encompasses academic, personal, emotional and social aspects. With an approach based on inquiry and conceptual understanding, this programme encourages children to develop their critical thinking, creativity and reflection, whilst also fostering an international mindset that enables them to understand and respect different cultures and perspectives.
How Does a Student at
The English School Learn in the PYP?
The PYP promotes values such as respect, empathy and cultural understanding, preparing students to solve problems and adapt to a changing world whilst enjoying the learning process.
They learn in a comprehensive and meaningful way
Students learn through Inquiry Units, which are cross-curricular topics that bring together various areas of knowledge.
Students learn actively and in a way that is connected to the real world
These units bring together various areas of knowledge within real-life, relevant contexts, enabling dynamic learning that is applied to real-life situations.
El proceso de enseñanza no se desarrolla de forma aislada
It is delivered in a cross-curricular manner, integrating subjects such as Language, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, Music, Visual Arts, Drama, Rhythm and Physical Education.
Practical use of English
This methodology enables students to use the language effectively in a variety of situations, strengthening their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in practical contexts.
Inquiry-based learning and skills development
Through projects based on questions and inquiry, children develop skills such as critical thinking, collaboration and communication.
PYP Exhibition (PYPx)
In the final year of the PYP, Grade 4, students participate in the PYP Exhibition (PYPx), a research project that brings together all the skills they have acquired. Through presentations, reports and discussions, children demonstrate their ability to research, reflect and communicate their ideas effectively.
PYP to MYP Transition
The PYP lays the foundations for robust inquiry-based learning and the development of cross-curricular skills. As they progress to the Middle Years Programme (MYP), students apply these skills in more specialised subjects, making connections across the curriculum and working on personal projects that reinforce critical thinking and independent learning.
What Makes the PYP at The English School Unique?
Our Primary Years Programme stands out for its bilingual approach and the incorporation of innovative strategies that enrich the learning experience. Some of its key features include:
Bilingual Approach
Students develop their skills in Spanish and English, with a focus on the practical use of the language.
Third Language
Phonetic strategies are implemented to support the learning of French from an early age.
Cultural Diversity
Through the Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL/ELE) programme, students whose mother tongue is not Spanish are provided with a linguistic foundation that facilitates their integration.
Connection with the Environment
The curriculum incorporates elements of Colombian culture and society, enabling children to identify with both their country and the globalised world.
Holistic Approach
We promote values such as integrity, respect and social responsibility, strengthening students’ commitment to their community.
At The English School, the PYP goes beyond academic knowledge by fostering a holistic education in which children become curious inquirers, critical thinkers, effective communicators, and well-rounded, reflective and caring individuals.
This innovative educational model positions us as one of the schools in Bogotá offering an innovative curriculum and a safe school environment, where children can reach their full academic and personal potential.
