Health Promotion and Prevention Programmes

A Safe and Healthy Learning Environment

Education also means protecting the heart of every student

At The English School, we believe that education means nurturing conscious, empathetic individuals who are capable of building healthy relationships and making responsible decisions throughout their lives. That is why each of our prevention and well-being programmes is designed to support students in their emotional and social development, equipping them with practical tools to tackle the challenges of an ever-changing world.

We know that nothing is more important than the safety, well-being and full development of each and every one of our students. That is why we work every day with dedication, professionalism and a deep sense of humanity to provide a safe, enriching and respectful learning environment, setting the standard among anti-bullying schools in Bogotá.

Dignity and Mutual Respect Programme

Our Dignity and Mutual Respect programme runs across all years, from Early Years and Primary through to Secondary. Its main aim is to prevent all forms of school violence by fostering a safe school environment through the teaching of valuable psychosocial skills and the development of prosocial competencies. This includes self-awareness, impulse control, intrinsic motivation, genuine empathy, active cooperation and deep respect for others.

These strategies take the form of enriching workshops, both inside and outside the classroom, which are carefully planned and led by expert psychologists. Furthermore, we actively involve the entire educational community, fostering a shared language and a strong sense of belonging through meaningful awareness-raising activities and the commemoration of key dates related to kindness and non-violence. Our core aim is to provide children and young people with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly complex social environment.

The Kiva Programme: Pioneering the fight against bullying in Colombia

We are pioneers in Colombia in the implementation of the KiVa programme, a Finnish initiative with a proven track record in promoting a positive school environment and preventing bullying.
Developed by the prestigious University of Turku (Finland) and successfully implemented in 15 countries across Europe and Latin America, KiVa arrived in Colombia in 2017 through the Escalae Institute, a leading body in educational research, with The English School being the first school in the country to adopt it. We have integrated it into our Early Years and Primary stages through its holistic approach, which encompasses prevention, early intervention and ongoing monitoring. Through KiVa, we work on developing, strengthening and promoting social-emotional skills, ensuring that every student thrives in an intrinsically safe learning environment.

We encourage a sense of shared responsibility to maintain a positive school environment and, through specific protocols aligned with the guidelines of the Secretary of Education, we effectively address potential bullying incidents. These protocols help students develop crucial conflict-resolution skills, foster empathy, and promote positive solutions in collaboration with our teachers. Of course, the primary objective is to stop any bullying situation, constructively involving victims, bullies and bystanders. Our teaching staff, parents and school bus attendants receive ongoing and up-to-date training.

Every year, we conduct a comprehensive survey that enables us to identify the prevalence of bullying, raise awareness of this issue amongst students, and obtain a valuable assessment of the school environment. This detailed evaluation also helps us to identify necessary adjustments to the curriculum and our intervention processes. Ultimately, the KiVa programme significantly benefits the school environment by preventing bullying and effectively addressing any cases that may arise, thereby minimising their negative effects. Furthermore, it instils in our students essential values such as respect, resilience in the face of peer pressure, and a strong sense of personal and social responsibility.

Programmes

Emotional Well-being and Sex Education Programme

The main aim of this comprehensive programme is to help students develop and strengthen a healthy, appropriate and responsible way of expressing and experiencing their emotions, as well as to foster effective social-emotional and physical self-care. We seek to prevent potential risks present in both the virtual environment and society by promoting values, attitudes, behaviours and knowledge relating to sexuality, actively involving parents through training and activities designed to meet the needs and developmental stages of their children.

Psychoactive Substances Prevention Programme

Aware of the latent risk posed by the use of psychoactive substances (PAS) among the school population and its negative impact on health, academic underachievement and socio-emotional well-being, The English School has taken the lead, with autonomy and commitment, in implementing a rigorous prevention programme aligned with the IB model. Developed by the school guidance department and based on the school’s previous experience with the external ‘Consentidos’ programme, this initiative proposes a comprehensive, scalable and coordinated approach.

The programme is integrated into the Life Skills (HPV) curriculum, the mentoring scheme and training sessions with families, thereby fostering an institutional culture of protection and the promotion of well-being.

This initiative is based on high-performing school environments, evidence-based prevention approaches and specialist training provided through the Colombo Plan’s Dru Advisory Programme (DAP), with the support of the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the US Department of State.
